Every time someone sees the end grain floor in our prototype photographs, the same question comes up. How long did that take? The honest answer is: several weekends. The follow-up question is never asked out loud, but it is always there. Is it worth it?
The conventional answer to flooring is engineered hardwood or large-format porcelain. Both are fast to install. Both look good on day one. Both cost €40–€80 per square metre installed. And both have a lifespan measured in decades before they need replacement, not centuries.
End grain is different. It is the cut ends of timber, arranged in a grid, glued down, sanded, and sealed. The same technique has been used in European factories, breweries, and railway stations since the nineteenth century. Some of those floors are still in service. The reason is simple: wood is hardest at the end grain. The fibres stand vertically, so foot traffic compresses them rather than shearing across them. A dropped hammer dents, but does not split. Water sits on the surface rather than soaking along the grain.
What it actually costs
The material cost depends entirely on where the timber comes from. If you buy end-grain tiles ready-made, the price is €50–€150 per square metre. That defeats the purpose. The point of end grain in an affordable build is that you make it from reclaimed timber, offcuts, or low-grade structural lumber that would otherwise be chipped.

The time question
A 25 square metre room, cut from 50mm thick timber, requires roughly 1,000 blocks at 150 × 150mm. Cutting on a bandsaw with a decent fence, you can produce about 100 blocks per hour. Arrangement and gluing adds another day. Sanding and sealing, two more. Total: five to seven days of active work, spread across evenings and weekends, for a single room.
This is why end grain belongs in the self-build model, not the hired-labour model. If you are paying a tradesperson €25 per hour, the labour cost swallows the material savings. If your own time has no invoice attached, the economics flip. The floor becomes the cheapest durable surface you can install, and the time becomes the price you pay for a surface that will not need replacement in your lifetime.
Why it works in the Hestia system
Our build assumes four to six people working together over two weeks. The floor cutting happens in parallel with frame assembly, roofing, and insulation. One person runs the bandsaw outside while others work on the structure. The blocks are cut, stacked, and allowed to acclimatise while the walls go up. By the time the shell is weathertight, the floor stock is ready to install.
The other advantage is compatibility. End grain floors are thick, typically 40–50mm. That mass sits directly on the pallet subfloor with no additional underlayment. The thermal mass stabilises interior temperature. The slight unevenness of hand-cut blocks, once sanded, creates a surface with grip and character that polished porcelain cannot replicate.
The real objections
"It will splinter." Not if sealed. Modern water-based polyurethane or hardwax oil penetrates end grain aggressively and forms a surface film. Re-sealing every five to ten years is routine maintenance, not a defect.
"It looks rustic." That is a matter of taste. A tight grid with uniform blocks, sanded to 120 grit and finished matte, reads as deliberate rather than rough. European industrial installations from the 1920s used this technique in high-end retail spaces precisely because it looked expensive, not because it looked cheap.
"I don't have a bandsaw." A decent benchtop bandsaw costs €200–€400. For a 50 square metre house, it pays for itself on the first room compared to purchased flooring. After the build, it becomes a workshop tool with residual value. Alternatively, many makerspaces and community workshops have bandsaws available for day hire at €15–€30.
The bottom line
End grain is not for everyone. If you value speed above all, buy laminate. If you value premium appearance above all, buy engineered oak. If you value longevity, extremely low material cost, and a floor with a story, end grain is the correct answer. The time is the price. The floor is the reward.
