Publish something useful enough that a community forms around improving it

Linux is not owned by anyone. That is precisely why it runs most of the world. Marcin Jakubowski published fifty industrial machines as the Global Village Construction Set, openly, and people built them everywhere. WikiHouse did the same for timber building components. The pattern is the same every time. Publish the knowledge, step back, and watch what the community builds.

Hestia is that pattern applied to the family home.

We work the same way. No patent. No factory dependency. No moat. The protocol is free. The plans are free. Anyone can build, adapt, teach, or improve. The only way this grows is if the knowledge spreads, and open knowledge spreads faster than any marketing.

A proprietary system has a customer. An open system has a community.

The closest relative

WikiHouse and Hestia are almost the same system. Both are built from OSB. Both use mineral wool insulation. Both are timber. Both are open-source. Both are assembled by hand, without specialist trades. The structural logic is nearly identical.

There is one difference. WikiHouse cuts its structural geometry on a CNC machine. Hestia uses the EPAL pallet, which is already manufactured to a precise standardised geometry, as that structural core. The pallet replaces the CNC machine.

That difference matters in a simple way. WikiHouse needs a CNC router to fabricate its blocks. That is a real piece of capital. It means a fabrication shop, a digital file, a machine, and someone who can run it. Far more open than conventional construction, but there is still a machine between you and the building.

Hestia removes that last machine. The pallet is the pre-fabricated block. It comes off industrial lines in every country in Europe, already cut, already certified, already standardised. The geometry WikiHouse pays a CNC machine to produce, Europe is already producing around 500 million times a year, as a side effect of moving goods around.

WikiHouse proved the idea. Open-source, OSB, mineral wool, hand-assembled, no specialist trades. They cut their structural core on a CNC machine. We use the EPAL pallet instead. We took the one machine still left in the system, and removed it.

Fifty machines, published openly

Marcin Jakubowski founded Open Source Ecology with a simple premise. Modern life depends on industrial infrastructure, but that infrastructure is enclosed: patented, proprietary, and expensive to access. He identified the fifty machines a small community needs to build a sustainable civilisation, from a tractor to a bakery oven to a circuit board mill, and published the designs, build instructions, and CAD files for all of them.

The Global Village Construction Set is not a product. It is a library. Anyone can download a design, build the machine in a workshop, and use it. The designs improve in public, the way open-source software does. Mistakes are shared. Improvements are shared. The knowledge compounds.

Hestia applies the same logic to housing. Every material in the system already exists, is already certified, and is already available. The EPAL pallet, the I-joist, the OSB sheet, the ground screw. None of them are ours. We did not invent the assembly method either. We simply wrote down how to combine existing things in a sequence that produces a home, and published it for free.

The proof that enclosure is optional

In 1991 Linus Torvalds released a kernel he had written as a personal project. He published it under a license that said: anyone can use this, anyone can modify it, anyone can distribute it, as long as they pass the same freedom forward. At the time this was considered naive. Software was a product. Products were sold. Intellectual property was fenced and monetised.

Today Linux runs the majority of the world's servers, supercomputers, and embedded devices. Android is built on it. The cloud is built on it. Nobody owns it. That is precisely why it works. Thousands of companies and millions of individuals contribute to it, not because they are paid to, but because they use it, and improving it is the most efficient way to get what they need.

The same pattern applies to physical systems. Hestia is not a product to buy. It is a protocol to use. The only way it gets better is if people build with it, find the weak points, and publish the fixes. The only way it scales is if the knowledge spreads faster than any company could market it.
